The Cardiac Center at General Hospital provides one of the most comprehensive programs available for patients with cardiovascular disease. In addition to providing non-invasive testing, diagnostic cardiac catheterization, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology studies and rehabilitation, the Cardiac Center participates in a number of national research studies and has been active in the development of new treatments for heart disease.

All patients receive assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention and evaluation of their individual care needs. Our cardiologists coordinate care with other members of the GW health care team including surgery, emergency and rehabilitation departments.

Non-Invasive Testing
The non-invasive cardiac laboratory includes tools to diagnose a variety of cardiac disorders. Studies can provide doctors with information about heart valves, heart muscle and the coronary arteries as well as possible congenital heart abnormalities. The following is a list of non-invasive procedures available:

  • Echocardiography:
  • Transthoracic 2D echocardiograms
  • Transesophageal echocardiograms
  • Exercise testing:
  • Treadmill exercise testing
  • Pharmacologic (adenosine dobutamine) nuclear perfusion scans
  • Exercise nuclear perfusion scans (thallium, technicium)
  • Exercise echocardiograms
  • Dobutamine echocardiograms
  • Exercise nuclear scans
  • Vascular laboratory:
  • Venous, arterial and carotid studies
  • Other cardiac nuclear studies: Nuclear ventriculograms (MUGA), Nuclear viability studies (thallium)

Cardiac Catheterization:
Cardiac catheterization involves the use radiological equipment to diagnose heart disease. Interventional tools such as balloons and stents are fed through a catheter into the coronary arteries to reduce stenosis and improve blood flow.

Diagnostics:

  • Cardiac hemodynamic measurement
  • Coronary angiography
  • Endomyocardial biopsy
  • Interventional services:
  • Balloon angioplasty
  • atherectomy
  • Coronary stenting
  • Intracoronary thrombolysis
  • Primary angioplasty for acute heart attack patients

Cardiac Arrhythmia Service
The Arrhythmia Service provides a full complement of diagnostic and treatment options for patients with cardiac rhythm disturbances. Evalutions by our team of electrophysiologists include in-hospital and by-appointment diagnostic electrophysiological testing.

Diagnostics:

  • Event monitor recording
  • 24 to 48 hour ambulatory Holter ECG monitoring
  • Signal average electrocardiograms
  • Tilt table testing
  • Treatments:
  • Catheter ablation of ventricular and supraventricular arrhythmias
  • Pacemaker implantation
  • Non-thoracotomy placement of implantable cardioverter-defibrillator devices
  • Anti-arrhythmic drug therapy
