General Hospital's Cancer Center offers comprehensive management of all oncologic disorders, with a special emphasis on breast cancer, leukemia and colon and rectal cancers.

Oncologists work closely with radiologists, pathologists and surgeons to provide the best possible treatment options. A multi-disciplinary team of doctors specializing in head and neck, gynecological, gastroenterological cancers and other malignancies provide total care for patients. The specially trained nursing staff of the center's inpatient oncology unit is committed to providing total quality care that promotes cure, sustains life and supports recovery from illness and injury.

As a part of a premier academic medical institution, patients have access to specialized cancer treatment protocols for acute oncologic problems including acute leukemia and complex neoplastic disorders. The Cancer Center is a member of the Eastern Cooperative Oncologic Group.

Clinical Coagulation Services:
Provides treatment for patients with coagulation problems including hemophilia, von Willegbrand disease, platelet disorders, thrombotic disorders.

Bone Marrow Transplantation:
Established in May 1992, the Bone Marrow Transplant program at General Hospital is dedicated to providing quality patient care continuously perfected through a multi-disciplinary team approach. The bone marrow transplant team strives to create a positive experience for every patient. To date, over 130 allogeneic and autologous stem cell transplants have been performed at the hospital.

Bone marrow and peripheral blood stem cell transplants are performed for several medical conditions including:

Aplastic anemia
Chronic myelogenous and lymphocytic leukemia
Acute myelogenous and lymphocytic leukemia
Lymphoma (Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's)
Myelodysplastic syndroms
Multiple myeloma
Breast cancer (adjuvant and metastatic)
Testicular cancer
Ovarian cancer


Hematology Services:
Provides management of disorders of red cells, white cells or platelets including sickle cell anemia and other hemoglobinopathies, myeloprolifertive diseases and myelodysplasia.
